Brethren,
When we depart the sacred confines of our Lodge we
enter the outside world, where we carry the messages
of Freemasonry with us.
A great responsibility indeed!
Mason's take on an even greater responsibility when
they wear a ring, pin, buckle or other insignia with
the Square and Compasses on it. For now the world
knows you as a proud Freemason, and will judge the
Fraternity by your behaviour. Truly, a genuine challenge!!

Zetland
Lodge - Calgary
Freemasonry
has been active in Alberta since 1883, and Zetland Lodge
has been part of the Masonic landscape since 1913. Our
Lodge meets on the first and third Thursday of every
month - except July and August. About
Freemasonry
|
|
Masonry
has always encouraged research, development and Higher
Learning. The Brethren of Zetland Lodge routinely deliver
talks and papers on the meaning and history of Freemasonry
on the first Thursday of the month - which is our monthly
business meeting. Degree work and other special events
are reserved for the third Thusday of the month.
Zetland
Lodge - History
|
It’s October 3rd 1913 and
among the many new arrivals to
Calgary are 30 Masons' who, having not yet affiliated
with the now 6 Masonic Lodges at labour
in the City, meet in the Board Room of theTrusts
and Guarantee Company located at 220 8th Avenue
West. They discuss the prospects of forming a new lodge.
Envisioning a lodge dedicated to excellence,
they choose to emulate the progress and general proficiencies
being exemplified by a Lodge in Toronto Ontario …
its called Zetland. Our records
do not readily appear to have elaborated on the reason
for this choice, but it may be safe to conclude that
since 68 of the 102 charter members were from Ontario,
Its quite probable that many would have had familiarity
with the proficiency of this lodge!

Calgary
Freemasons' Hall
In 1922 the Calgary
Lodges meeting in the Lodge room contained
on the 3rd and 4th floors of the Alexander
Corner Building then owned by Senator
James Lougheed became concerned with the
long term security of the premises. There
appeared to be substance to the rumour
that Lougheed was to sell the building,
… in fact Steele Co. Ltd was negotiating
the purchase of the property with the
intention of operating a department store. |
|
The Masons'
of Calgary got together to discuss the the
possible loss of their meeting place - and
more importantly how to build a hall for
all Masons'. Brethren from Zetland Lodge
centred prominently in the deliberations
with other Lodges and jurisdictions on how
to address the many issues like: funding,
ownership and design which eventually led
to the formation of the Calgary Masonic
Temple Board Ltd.
Calgary FreeMasons' Hall
finally opened it's doors on January 1,
1930 to accept its shareholding and tenant
Lodges and Concordant
Bodies. |

Our Beautiful
- Hand Painted - Pipe Organ
|
Our
Casavant Pipe Organ is one of only six built for
Masonic Buildings in Canada and the U.S. In roughly
1910 the organ was delivered to the Perfection
Lodge - located upstairs in the Alexander Block,
in downtown Calgary. Early in 1928 the Casavant
Organ was moved into Freemasons' Hall where it
still resides.
The
organ is one of the oldest of it's type in Canada
and the first in Alberta to employ electropneumatic
|
|
| action.
This revolutionary method was pioneered by the Casavant
brothers, and our organ is one of the very few in
almost original condition. |
